European business and financial life is punctuated almost daily by the need to adopt more ambitious and more respectful behaviour and objectives in social and environmental terms, and in particular in terms of the transition to a low-carbon economy. In the financial sector, this movement is often seen under the banner of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria, which have gone from being marginal to becoming a major phenomenon in the contemporary financial industry. However, in reaction to this new international situation, a recent and essentially American movement has emerged to oppose this development, which is considered to be detrimental to investors' interests.
